ABOUT POSSUM KINGDOM LAKE

Possum Kingdom Lake covers in excess of 20,000 acres in Palo Pinto, Stephens, Young, and Jack Counties, with the majority of it being in Palo Pinto County, Texas. It meanders along the Brazos River through limestone cliffs and cedar brakes, sandy beaches and mesquite flats. Deer, raccoons, and many other forms of wildlife drink from its waters and graze along its shores.
With a shoreline of approximately 310 miles, there is a wide variety of tent sites, R. V. hookups, lodge accommodations, swimming beaches, picnic areas, boat ramps, stores, restaurants and gift shops. Brazos River Authority has public use areas scattered among the cedar brakes and along the sandy beaches of the peninsula. The Possum Kingdom State Park stretches along the south-west shore between Caddo Creek and Cedar Creek. Private accommodations are scattered along the remainder of the shoreline.
The water surface extends from the dam almost to Graham, twisting and turning for a total of 65 river miles. Its maximum width is just over 3 miles. That 65 miles gives excellent opportunity for fishing, boating, sailing, water skiing, swimming, scuba diving, and use of personal water crafts.
Folks flock to the lake from every direction during the summer, most getting out of the city and away from any organized religious outreach of their home communities. From Friday evening through Sunday morning of the ordinary summer weekend, one sees a stream of automobiles and campers pulling boats toward the lake. Then on Sunday afternoon and evening the stream suddenly reverses itself.
The name Brazos River is a shortening of the original name of El Rio de los Brazos de Dios - River of the Arms of God. It is the goal of Possum Kingdom Resort Ministries to make that name a reality. Instead of fleeing from the outreach of the churches, PKRM would have the travelers fleeing into the arms of God, and into the stronghold of His dedicated resort missionaries.
